Breast Reconstruction has become a highly preferred procedure for women to be satisfied with thanks to the technology that is advancing every day in the field of medicine.
When Is Breast Reconstruction Performed?
After breast cancer, the breast repair procedure is divided into two. The first is a simultaneous reconstruction that can be performed with mastectomy, and the second is a late reconstruction after breast surgery.
Simultaneous reconstruction is a procedure used in the process of breast cancer that is diagnosed at an early stage. By protecting the breast skin of the patient, it is ensured that the patient feels good psychologically. While general surgeons perform mastectomy for breast cancer, plastic surgeons performs breast reconstruction.
In processes that require a waiting state, delayed reconstruction is preferred. Patients may sometimes accept breast cancer and not want a surgical procedure. In such cases, the process that occurs after the expectation is also called Delayed Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction Procedure
There are two different methods to reconstruct the breast that has been removed or will be removed. The first of these methods is a breast reconstruction operation created with breast prostheses. The second is breast tissue, which is formed from parts obtained from the patient's own tissue. The choice between these methods is based on certain criteria. By the joint opinion and decision of the patient and the surgeon, the choice is made according to these criterias. However, if the tissue and muscles in the area of the breast to be repaired do not meet the demanded rate, prosthesis reconstruction cannot be preferred. In this case, it is more reliable to apply the patient's own tissue.
• age of the patient;
• general health status of the patient
• applied mastectomy technique
• whether patient has received radiotherapy or not
• general body structure and index
• the proportion between the breast
selected according to criteria such as.
There are prostheses in the form of gel or saline in prosthetic breast reconstriction. These prostheses, consisting of a silicone surface, are placed in the breast area in a practical and short time.
In the reconstruction made with patients tissue, the procedure is done by taking the patient's own tissue. Although back tissue is usually used, the thinness of the layer of back tissue is also an important factor.
Risks and Complications of Breast Implants
Although there is a very low probability of breast reconstruction performed using a prosthesis;
• infection in the area,
• extinction of prosthesis;
• loss of the natural appearance of the breast due to the formation of hard tissue
there is a possibility that such complications may occur. However, it usually does not pose a risk and does not harm the patient. Implants, which have an average of 15-20 years of long-lasting use, may vary in the duration of use according to the body structure of the patient. The fact that the implants used are of good quality will give the patient confidence in terms of usage time and comfort.
